A big part of what helicopters do is search and rescue. Well we were part of a very important rescue. The rescue of grapes. That’s right, grapes. We’ve recently had some chilly mornings with frost here in Ontario and the grape vines are full of buds or new shoots that are very delicate and can be easily damaged from the frost destroying an entire seasons worth of wine production. Rescue indeed. We hover taxi at a height where we can find warmer air along with a person on the ground measuring temperature throughout the property and draw that air down and displace the lower cooler air. For Vineland Estates Winery this met with resounding success. They suffered no damage while other farms throughout the region suffered damage. You gotta love helicopters and the 500 is perfect for the job. Heaven forbid we have no wine.
